Register a Non-Profit Organization

A Non-Profit Organization (NPO) is a legal entity formed for purposes other than making a profit. Its primary goal is to pursue activities that benefit society, such as charitable, educational, religious, or humanitarian objectives. NPOs use any surplus funds to further their mission rather than distributing profits to owners or shareholders. These organizations often rely on donations, grants, and fundraising to support their operations and fulfill their social or community-oriented goals.

Registering as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers significant advantages for non-profit organizations, including the ability to issue tax-deductible donation receipts, which encourages contributions. It also opens up opportunities for grants from government and private programs that require charitable status. Additionally, registered charities benefit from exemptions on income tax for their charitable activities and are generally exempt from Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on most supplies and services, allowing them to allocate more resources to their missions.

All Federal Non-Profit Organizations must register with the Provincial Government where the head office of your organization is located. Your Federal non-profit organization is not complete without this registration. Proof of an extra-provincial registration is often required for opening bank accounts and for lease agreements. We have included this extra-provincial registration as it is mandatory for all Federal Non-Profit Organizations.

Agent for service: is a contact person for the corporation who resides in Alberta. Government or other agencies may contact the agent for service for official purposes and must be available to respond on behalf of the corporation. Usually a director can be an agent of service.
